Weeds can be a huge problem for property owners as they can not only drag down the curb appeal of lawns, but they can also steal nutrients and other resources from grass. Here in South Dakota, there are four weeds in particular that commonly invade lawns here: dandelions, crabgrass, leafy spurge, and field pennycress. In this blog, you will learn about these weeds, so you'll be able to keep a lookout for them. You'll also learn about the best ways to get rid of them, so you'll be able to keep your lawn free of these invasive plants!
1. Dandelions
Dandelions are very common weeds that are often found in lawns in South Dakota. This type of weed can be identified by its dark green leaves that have jagged edges. When this weed is mature, it produces yellow flowers, which eventually turn into white seed heads. When this weed is in its seed stage, some people pick them and blow the seed heads off of them, as there is a superstition that blowing all of the seeds off it will make a wish come true. However, unless you wished for more dandelions, it's unlikely to work. That's because these seeds are spread by the wind, or by people blowing them, and when they reach the ground, they can grow into more weeds. Both pre- and post-emergent weed control treatments are effective at controlling this weed.
2. Crabgrass
Crabgrass is another weed that often makes its way onto lawns in South Dakota. This type of weed is often mistaken for fescue grass, but it can be identified by its coarse, light green leaves that spiral out and resemble the legs of a crab - hence its name. This type of weed thrives in hotter temperatures and can take over lawns during the summer when cool-season grass growth has slowed. Pre-emergent weed control treatments are effective at preventing this weed from sprouting, and post-emergent treatments can be used to eliminate existing crabgrass.
3. Leafy Spurge
Leafy spurge is a perennial weed that typically appears on lawns in late spring and summer. This type of weed can grow up to 4 feet tall in certain conditions and can be identified by small, yellow-green flowers. When the flowers, stems, or leaves of this weed are broken, they will emit a white, milky sap that can be toxic to some animals. You can help prevent this weed from establishing itself on your lawn with pre-emergent weed control treatments and if it's already established on your lawn, you can get rid of it with post-emergent weed control treatments.
4. Field Pennycress
Field pennycress is part of the mustard family and can grow 1-2 feet tall. This unique-looking weed can easily be identified by its long, skinny appearance and typically has small flowers on the top of each stem that are usually white or yellow. In South Dakota, this weed typically blooms from mid-spring to mid-summer. Both pre-emergent and post-emergent weed control treatments are effective at controlling this type of weed.
When crushed, the leaves from field pennycress weeds emit a garlicky odor.
